This may sound like a dumb question(I already posted this on the Auto Register, but figured there may be a little more response here), but I am working on a 92 SPI Japanese Spec AUTOMATIC Mini and the forward gears no longer work/engage. Reverse works beautifully. My question is, can you replace the forward clutch plates without pulling motor like you can replace a manual clutch in a Mini IE: jack up right side of motor, pull radiator out, radiator bracket, and governer housing? Then slip out the forward clutch plates? This may sound stupid, but this car has all the bells and whistles... brake booster, air conditioning, etc. Originally I was thinking about dropping the engine with the subframe out the bottom. Now I pulled the bonnet off and was getting ready to pull it out the top, but curious if anyone has been able to do it the way I mentioned.. I have to replace the radiator regardless, so that is coming out anyway. I didn't want to have to discharge the A/c if I did not have to.

Thanks guys.

Dont think there are mini's with more than 1 clutch? don't kno the japanese spec though.

But seems like a gearbox failure to me...

Should have mentioned.... forward clutch... in a AUTOMATIC. I have the new clutch plates (2) for forward. Again was just wondering if this was possible to undo motor mount, jack up right side of engine, remove radiator, and governer housing and slip out forward clutch plates, and put new ones in. It's probably wishful thinking that it's not a engine out job...

If he couldn't work that out, he shouldn't be posting.

I'm fairly sure from memory you can change the forward clutches with the engine in situ.

There is a mod with uprated plates, did you find it? It's all about using thicker friction materials and one less plate and machining the intermediate plates.

I know of the upgrade to 3 plates, but since time is of the essence we are just gonna do the stock 2 plate replacement. Honestly the car is not gonna see a lot of miles. Anyway I have a spare auto box I disassembled and it seems very interesting lining everything back up to put it back together. May be a major ball ache to do it in situ.
