Hi everyone
I have just bought a 91 cooper but the engine has no id plate on it, would there be any other id numbers on the engine to say what it is

I think that the 1275 lumps had no removable inspection plates on the back where the pushrods pass through but i'm by no means an expert so i would wait for someone to clarify

it'll be faster than a 998.

simple route to follow..... is it injection ?
yes......you got yourself a 1275cc mini
no..... im stumped....and nothing else clever to say..... but Im pretty sure its a 1275
hope it helps :)

I think the 91 would be a mainstream cooper on carbed, so not injection. Whip the rocker cover off and give us the casting number off the head. 12G940 will be 1275 in most cases unless it is a modded 998 of course.

Also if it has two core plugs on the clutch side of the engine block it's probably a 1275, a breather on the timing chain cover on the fan side of the engine, no inspection chambers on the rear of engine are all good signs but number is the best id

Look down the back of the engine, under the exhaust manifold. If there's a pair of rectangular plates on there, it is a 998 (or an early 1275....which is really unlikely).
Is there a reason you suspect it's not a 1275? The ID plate may have been removed if the engine has been reconditioned.

still haven't had a chance to check im working away from home, I think it might possibly have been reconditioned. a lot of good points to check out thanks guys

Look down the back of the engine behind the inlet/exhaust manifolds.
If it has two rectangular cover plates about 7" long by 3" high fitted side by side, then it is a 998 engine (or an early Cooper 997, Cooper 'S' 1071, 1275 or 970, but that's unlikely). If the rear of the block has no such apertures it is a 1275 non-Cooper 'S' engine.
