Hello,

I am placing sc drops in my gearbox. I noticed that you Can wiggle a little bit with the first motion shaft ( left to right) is This normal?

I also noticed that the plastic bearing case from the double bearing is broken on Some places. Is This a problem?

There were many Minis and Metros driving around for thousands of miles with those plaggy cages in bits. It's not ideal, but nor has it proved to be a major issue. The first motion shaft is without the help of the spigot bearing while the tranny case is off, so again, it wouldn't worry me in itself.

SC drop suggest you have an uprated engine, which will place more strain on the main double roller bearing.

As the engine is off the gearbox already I would consider it the height of folly not to change a crucial component you know to to be terminally damaged.

No-one want the diff to come out the back when the mainshaft locks up...

Fair comment,if you're already in for 3 to 4 hundred quids worth of goodies, £50 quid to improve the chances of it staying together isn't so bad.

Can the third motion shaft bearing be removed without removing the first motion shaft?

The only way to remove that bearing is a full strip down unfortunately because you have to tap the whole main shaft towards the first motion end to get access to the bearing to tap it out

The broken cage is the first stage if failure. Completely strip and change all the bearings now before a major failure ruins all your new components and shrapnel finds it's way into your crank bearings, pistons/bores, and camlobes and followers!

Ok thank you. Disassembled the gearbox this morning. All bearings will be changed.

The plastic cages were notoriously bad when they were introduced. Working in a dealership at the time, the tell tale "tick" of the balls circulating was ignored, without any consequences. I'll readily accept that was with mundane road cars and while they were still under warranty.
