Hi all

Today I noticed that the body work each side of the bonnet has lots of white smears on them and they won't come off. My dad has also noticed this on his mg bgt while we were looking at how to get the, off my car. His car is covered in these white smears.

The only thing we can think of what is could be is that there was a very heavy thunderstorm the other night and that the rain had been ironized by the electrons in the storm or something else like that made the rain very strange.

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this on there car and been able to remove these very strange white smears.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

Henry

I would use something like Scholl Concepts S17+ or a dab of Farclea G3 to see if that buffs them out.

I have seen that before, but it was on a car that had got wet before the paint was fully hardened (about three weeks after spraying). A good polish got it out.

Looks like the rain has oxidised the top layer of your clear coat. A good polish should clear that up. Get the same thing out here somtimes. Not sure if as you mention its ionisation of the water and some electrochemical reaction or just simply acidic rain reacting with the clear coat. Either way give it a good polish

Is your Dad's car red too?  Just wondered as I had a red E30 BMW where the paint on the bonnet did the same thing when it got wet (usually a couple of months after polishing), came out each time with a good polish.

Looks like the lacquer has detatched itself from the paint layer

It's not lacquer, that will be oxidisation. My wife's Red Polo was bad and just like that. A good polish would get rid of it but if left would reappear. Something about the colour itself. I have seen numerous other red cars especially older vehicles with the same issue.

And yes if left in the rain it would spot and look like that. Even some car washes would affect it depending on the shampoo used. Her car was a solid red colour.

Bit odd, I have the same issue, not a new paint job by any means, but had been stood  out in the rain, not managed to polish them out either.

Might have to try some better quality stuff.  Was worried at first, had major trouble with the brakes and thought it could have been fluid, until I saw the marks all over the roof as well.

Do you get your car waxed? It's hard to tell from the pictures, but sometimes the wax on a car will become cloudy white. If that's the case, you need to research before you try to fix it, but I think one of the fixes could be to use some "paint prep" to remove any waxes or solvents from the finish, then re-wax it. Make sure you check the directions on the product for suitability for your application, though.

Also, an auto detailer might have a better idea about what the problem is, go talk to one?

Lick your finger and wipe the area. If it disappears when wet then it's most likely oxidation. As said, a good polish should remove it and then wax it after to prevent it happening again.
