Just had another thought. I have had these when the iguanas out here decide to relive themselves or mango tree leaves are allowed to decompose on the paint. I was told the mango sap that is released when decomposing is acidic, and well iguana leavings stain like nobody's business and they often live off these fruits.
Given both yours and your fathers cars have these smeres it sounds to me like the rain you had may have been acidic and reacted with the clear.
