Now I know some are going to be getting hot under the collar with the legal aspect & the con's of this subject, but..................

I posted on here last week, "tyres catching the arch"

All other options aside for a mo.

I am just kicking this idea around in my head as an option. Currently have 13" Superlite's shod with 175 x 55 which are catching the replica fibreglass Sportpack arches,

How much extra clearance could I achieve by stretching some say 155 x 70 or 145 x 70 tyres on?

Lights blue touch paper, stands back and !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.

Just worked out that the tyre "thickness" of a 155x70 is 108.5mm and 145x70 = 101.5mm (I think these are right).

You could probably gain more room with a 175x50 profile (87.5mm).

Personally I don't know about the legal implications of having stretched tyres but the handling must be poor compared to when the tyres sidewall is being used as it should.

I saw a VW with stretched tyres on the motorway the other day and it looked good from the side but as it moved in front of me it looked like he had bike tyres on, very little contact and grip with the road.

I had stretched tyres on a lupo for a few months, only got pulled once because of them, but it drove ****. Used to really like the look, now I think it looks crap. So does loads of others I know who used to be into the look

This is the stretch I had going on :P lupo scraped like hell with them on lol even fairly flat roads :P

I'd done some similar calculations as well but it's the unknown factor of the radius formed from the sidewall to the tread caused by the stretch.I did calculation based on 12" rims with correct sized tyres but without having some to try I'm not convinced this will solve my problem either.

I'm not struck on the look either Megamini_jb

Without wanting to get into the stretched issues, If the car was mine and there was a quick bodge way of sorting it or a proper way, I would do it right. That way the car is better to drive, you enjoy it more, its safer etc etc AND if you come to sell it the value will be higher. If you want a simple fix have you considered going to 12s? They feel better on smaller wheels anyway so double bonus. If you are thinking of going down the suggested route then I would check the tyre makers website as they list rim sizes for each tyre, I would never use a tyre outside of the makers specs and the possibile outcomes of doing so have been discussed many times on here before.
