hi all

my mates had an MG towed in his place for scrap but he's phoned me because he reckoned there's some very serviceable spares, so I stopped by to take a look and was shocked to see an a series engine under bonnet, mounted in-line, it also has twin SU carbs along with alternator and starter, in fact most ancillaries.

I didn't realise some MG's had a series engines in them but clearly they do. so I said to him I know this web site where you can put the engine number in and it'll tell you all about it.

I've just been on guess works and stumbled at the first hurdle. the engine number I've got written down is

18ve -h17 1983 408

and there isn't an 18ve prefix on the guessworks site

have I written it down wrong or do guessworks not cover MG based Aseries? probably the first option....

can anybody help?

As above, it's a B-series engine.

Here's a link to MG engine codes.

true,. weight wise tho and for all round performance the spridget was the winner,,much easier to tune and a more or less a streight swop, the b was / is a heavy lump up front in the minor bay and does not tune as easily, similar weight to a v8, wow mogs can be so much fun,, :proud:

18v is the code for a B series 1800 engine. Looks similar in some ways to an A series but a bit bigger. They were also fitted to few others like the marina and 1800 land crab.

Frontline spridget do conversions to fit 1.8vvc k series into midgets. Pulls the pants down on a b series, maybe even a v8.
