I just took delivery of a 1975 Mini 1000. The headlights will not come on. The high beam switch turns the high beams on, but does not keep them on. I  have to hold the switch. I do not drive it at night, right now.

I'm a newbie - any advice?

Thanks.

Do the sidelights work? Check the switch, just pull it out of the dash and unplug the connector and test the switch for continuity in the various positions

Do you have a multimeter to check if the problem is inside the switch, I assume your holding the flash on for main beam, which confirms the main beam circuit is intact. Check the Blue/white for main beam and Blue/red for dip at the connector at the base of the switch wiring at the base of the column cowling, if you have voltage into the dip switch from the headlight switch then it points towards defective contacts inside the switch assy.

Check the black earth cable behind the middle of the front grille. it has 3 small black bullet connectors, probably need terminals cleaning, I would also clean all the connections there #(side, dip, main, indicators, earth at that location at same time) sounds like something simple to fix! Enjoy your Mini.

High beam is OK.

Thank you to all who offered assistance. I checked the switch, made sure all the connections were tight, and my lights worked!

Now I have to figure out why the tachometer doesn't work.....
