Disc Brake Conversion, Stiff Cv Joints?

Best Answer Ethel , 21 June 2014 - 10:13 PM

My first thought was the diff if you're turning one hub by hand. There's also a known issue with running 7.5" discs on 8.4" swivel hubs; the inside of the discs can foul the on the nose of the hubs - remedied by filing a radius on the edge around oil seal.

Hi all - first time posting here but these forums have helped more times than I can count so hoping someone can come to my aid!

Recently upgraded to a 1275 from an 850 so I'm fitting disc brakes. I fitted the old driveshafts to the new hubs this afternoon and fitted everything to the car. One side is all good but on the other when turning by hand I can make a random number of turns, I'd say between 1/2 and about 2 before the whole thing goes very stiff and requires quite a bit of effort to turn. After a 1/4 of a turn or so it turns freely again and repeats. The inner CV on the gearbox seems fine, all ball bearings seem clean and there's plenty of grease in the joint. If I remove the shaft from the car the whole things turns freely so I'm thinking its the inner joint but I can't think what the problem could be? Does it just need time to settle, or will the angle of the drive change when it's fitted to the car and solve the issue (as it's all currently on the subframe out of the car)? Think I'm just being optimistic here though  :shy: ! I also haven't tightened the the main hub nut as I thought it would be a lot easy with the weight of the car to help!

Drum brakes use a small cv than the disc ones.

Thanks Shifty. The outer CV's came as part of a kit with the discs - I don't think the pot joint CV's are different?

Have you got the calipers fitted?? if so then this maybe your problem.

I have the Minispares 7.5" conversion from drums to discs on my clubman. When i fitted the brakes the hub flange and caliper fouled ever so slightly. A quick blend on the caliper ( and i mean a very small blend) problem sorted.

I think you may be onto something - I first assembled the whole kit together a while ago but I now remember having to file the hub very slightly so the bolt holes lined up between the caliper and the hub so maybe it's fouling. I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know!  :D

It was indeed the disc fouling on the hub. All sorted now and running smooth. Thanks for all the help!
