Over the past 5 years its been on the road I've done 40,000 miles in it, but its been crashed into twice (both times in Carparks!!!!) first was the passenger wing which mostly pulled out, and second was the A -Panel/door, which will also pull out!! We also had to fit a new gearbox, after it failed on the way to Birmingham IMM. but other that the normal little hipcupps, its been a amazing mini.

But its come to the time where my beloved and faithful Sky need to be sold  - Personally over the past 5 years, I've changed jobs, qualified as a Accountant (boring), Got married and brought a house - Our lives are moving into thinking of starting a family, which means we need a family car :(. I will still keep a mini  - My Green one that I have had for 12 years!!!

But before we sell it needs tidying up a little - hence the project thread - It doesn't need a huge amount of work so expect it to be a quick one - I'm hoping to get it finished for IMM!! And as before back to the original spec

Here are a few pics of it stripped down:

I remember reading the first build when I first joined the forum. Loved it! My favourite LE the sky. Awesome build. As well as Hugh's sky build on here! His is more grass than sky now lol :P but wow very inspiring and fantastic job he done, like yourself. Shame you'll be selling though

It will be sooooo sad to sell it, but there is no way we can sell my green one - I've had it for 12 years!!!, and only had the sky for 8 years!! And we will need the money to buy a family car - I'm after a mk5 golf :)

The plan for the rebuild is to re-spray it, and do a few mechanical bits that aren't quite right - the main one is the head, the valve stem seals have gone and it smokes on start up - it also needs a new wheel bearing and ball joint adjustment - there is really not much!! Its had a recent service with new plugs, leads, dizzy cap, and rear brakes. I will put new discs and pads on the front, and new shocks on the rear as the bushes are starting to go....

Here a few pics of the small bits of welding we have had to do

Rear side window:

20140622_150226.jpg

Bonnet:

20140622_150255.jpg

Wing around the indicator hole - the rest of the wing was fine!!

20140622_171640.jpg

Toe Board/floor - this is a bit that we haven't welded before!!

20140622_171704.jpg

And the oily head

20140622_171648.jpg

For some stupid reason the first time round I decided not to braze up the top scuttle/wing joins (the wing/front panel ones are done) and predictably the surface rust crept in - so Dad has brazed them up for me :)

And ground back

Head going back together after a decoke and valves lapped in by my lovely husband :)

20140626_191127.jpg

I'm hoping to get it painted next weekend, the main body is very straight so won't need much work, but the scuttle joins will need a bit of work as will the A panel where some lovely person reserved into it - Dad has knocked the worse out - so will just need a skim of filler...

Its been a few days since I've added to this - we have been busy rubbing down and priming!!

All the surface rust has been cleaned off, treated and red - oxided - leaving the mini looking a but odd!!

20140629_170820.jpg

20140629_170809.jpg

Head is back on - We haven't run it yet, as it doesn't have any fuel in it....

20140629_170800.jpg

Sky stickers Removed :(

20140705_122647.jpg

Is now had a couple of coats of primer and its starting to look good - I haven't taken any pics for a while tho

We also had a little surprise under the passenger front wing - the metal between the door bolt holes had bowed out - the paint was not broken - but as soon as I saw it I knew it wasn't going to be good - and I was right

20140705_174110.jpg

its rusted out between the 2 layers of metal, and even eaten through the repair that I did 5 years ago - slightly shocked by this one - but it was mostly original metal that had rotted away. I repaired this last night -but forgot to take some pics, it was a late night!!

I was originally hoping to paint it last weekend - which is now gonna move to the early part of next week -which may make it a little harder to get ready for IMM - A few more late nights may be needed!!

So we have been busy!!

Rust cut out and repaired

20140709_193108.jpg

New bootlid - the original one from my green mini - which had only a few spots of surface rust after 10 years, compared to a massive hole in the skys original after 5 years!!!

This pic shows the layers of paint!! biege - Connught green and British racing green!!

20140709_212206.jpg

and the door and bonnet being flatted back

Then we painted the roof on Monday evening last week

So Saturday i flatted back a few runs in the paint dimples in the paint and polished up, and now we are started to put it all bak together

20140719_164723.jpg

What a fantastic refresh!

I have one burning question - what paint code did you use for the bumpers etc?

Yes, I'd love to know this too. I have Nimbus trim on my Racing, and it's virtually impossible to get now, so any alternative that works is worth knowing!
