I'm new to minis so help is appreciated if not what can I do carry on with the one I got as its smaller and fits but is grinding :(

The older style are all the same size. Why not just buy a replacement pre-engaged starter? Not sure the older one works on a pre-engaged flywheel gear anyway. (my experience is with the older engines)

Also check the teeth on the flywheel for damage if you can. With the start motor off and pluhs out you should be able to turn it over bit by bit and see/feel through the starter mounting hole.

If I buy a replacement surely I would just get the same problem as it being a pre engaged and different teeth also hence the grinding. The flywheel is ok no damage to be seen.

Think its going to be an issue as the box is still 1000 and engine is a later metro

Wont be the box. you can only use the ring gear and starter as a pair they not interchangeable, the verto uses a 129 tooth and the inertia starter 107 tooth, you should check its not a faulty solenoid causing your problem

I'm a bit puzzled that the inertia (earlier type) won't fit on. It should clear the filter by miles and the dizzy can be  turned if there is a clearance issue, just turn it by 90 degrees and move the plugs leads round in the opposite direction. You'll need to reset the timing of course.

Inertia starters engage by pulling the motor pinion towards the motor, pre-engaged push it away from the motor - the teeth of the ring gear are chamfered accordingly, so that's another way of identifying which ring is fitted to your flywheel. Chamfers on engine side for pre-engaged, clutch side for inertia.

It could be the correct starter motor but the selonoide is crap or could be the wrong starter and will need to fit initial one and move dizzy and also do timing have never set timing before so I'm hoping its the first option ???

Mark and count the teeth to identify which you have if you cant identify the chamfer on the teeth due to wear.

Hang on if your starter is hitting the oil filter can then its a block thats been modified for a mini from a Maestro A+  block? (marina/ital blocks need a bit more work if I remember)  they have the oil filter up high on the distributer side. see below and confirm if thats where your filter is. Something springs to mind also you have to use a short filter on the mini not the long ones. I assume you have a verto clutch assy (short clutch arm) in which case you should have a 129 tooth ring gear and a per-engaged starter.

No my bad sorry it dosent hit the oil filter just the dizzy and I'm new to minis only being 17 you see so got a plenty to learn and this is another lesson if it still has the standard box the car is a 1971 it won't have a pre engaged will it but I suppose somebody has put one on because of the 1275 engine and metro electronic ignition.

You need to count the teeth as forget the gearbox its the combonation of flywheel/ring gear you need to look at, you can interchange the 2 typres as a unit, do you have a long clutch arm or short? see below.

Short arm is verto and goes with the 129 toot ring gear and use a pre-engaged starter.

Its a short arm I just looked thank you for advise and I have a pre engaged stater so it is obviously a dodgy solenoid it sparks a little and clicks ?

If the solenoid is sparking and clicking then it points towards a faulty solenoid which you can replace, if your sure the connnections are clean where it bolts on.
