I've just bought a new complete heater unit for my classic mini project (austin 1987) and there's two wires coming from the top. The green wire is a spade hook and is attached to the control panel. But the black wire isn't attached to anything and I don't know where it goes. I already have two wires attached to my car from a previous heater unit so I was going to use those as it would be easier but I don't know where I'm supposed to attach them to any advice would be helpful

Black wire is, as you may expect, earth.

I would guess the two wires you have could be for a two speed fan and the "new" unit is single speed!

What colour are the wires in the car?  If one of those is black then probably an earth that was already there to connect to the heater's black earth wire?  If not, then maybe as Rog46 says (although I have never had a 2 speed fan).  The Green wire in the heater as you said is connected at the switch and the other wire in the car (if one is an earth) is the feed for the other connection on the switch.  No photos have come through, but you should be able to trace the wires in the car back to see where they end - just to be safe.

Black is definitely the earth/negative. The green on the heater is the positive from the fan, to be attached to the secondary side of the on/off switch, the original green/positive on the loom will connect to the primary of the switch, again with a spade connector.
