I'll be following this thread closely. I'm interested to hear the difference in performance between the SW8 and the SW5, and which would be better for a 1380 daily driver.

I have an sw8 in my 1330 had and sw5 in my old 1275the idle is a lot more "camy" than the sw5 and is a little "rough" below 3k rpm but performance is good I achieved 95 bhp and 88ftpt peak at 4000rpm

Not trying to hijack the thread but...

Which would be better all around, a SW5 or a Kent 266?

They are prob very similar both on the mild side so I don't think there would be much in it

this is what I need to know as I am not sure what cam to go with but I do like the look of the sw8 cam that's why I asked the questions as im putting bits together to build a engine up

Depends on the engine. I've heard that a SW5 is a great all around mild cam with nice responsiveness starting at 1500 rpm. Anything more than a mild cam is a bit silly unless you're taking it to the race track.

And whats that going on? Ive got an sw10... its perfectly drivable in heavy traffic, as proven on l2b.

Presumably its going on the power graphs and cam specs.

My 286 is perfectly drivable in traffic and generally at low revs. However my evo1 cam (266 ish) is so much better.

A 286 or sw10 does not get going until the revs are north of 3k so are not in any way best suited to town traffic. A milder cam has much more torque and useable power lower down the revs.

Like the op I would like to know more about the sw8. It could be a very nice middle ground.

Says on the website that they kick in at about 2300 rpms. Seems like that would make for a decent idle and pretty civilized acceleration.

When discussing cams the most important thing is to have the cam graphs and then compare their outputs to your desired driving style.

If you want real top end power and are prepared to use up to 7000 rpm, then go for a cam which gives peak power at 6400/6500 rpm.

However, if you want your engine to have a longer life before re-builds, look for a cam with peak power at 5500/5700 rpm and only use a maximum of 6000 rpm.

Doing this means that you are choosing the cam by using proper engineering techniques instead of going on 'bar-room BS' about this cam & that cam.

Personally I never use a cam for which I don't have a proper graph as without one there is no way of knowing how it will fit the intended use.

There is more nonsense talked about cams than anything else in Mini engine building & modification.

Don't forget, gearing is also a factor in cam selection.

You mean like this one?
