Hi there guys!

First proper topic aside from introduction here. New to all this and love the community!

'Obi Wan' reference due to the fact I'm new and yet to be a Jedi in this art!

Need some advice R:E dealing with rot on the window sill/rear quarter of Audrey. My cheeky yet bedraggled 83 Mayfair.

I've scoured the forums for advice, and ideas for treating the rust. My skills are however limited so wanted to ask your advice.

The link to the offending articles:

http://s1280.photobu...rary/Rot Window

Before I carry on I haven't the money or skillset to replace the rear quarters in their entirety. *(just as a question how much of a pig of a job is it?!)

So below are my options:

1. Treat both sides of the quarter with KURUST multiple times, zinc prime, filler over, paint.

(though i'm sure its no miracle cure and it will be back to haunt me?)

2. Grind out all the rust to when I get to good metal, have a pretty big hole, Plate behind by

creating a custom shape to fit/take into account curves, prime, fill, paint.

3. Bite the bullet and replace rear quarter. I know its obviously the best idea (but as explained not really doable for me at moment)

4. Answers on the back of a post card!

Im a bodywork novice, and I want to do it so it doesn't just come straight back so as much as I know ive probably answered my own question to a point, id love your opinions.

Great forum and great people,

Thanks,

You shouldn't need to replace the whole quarter if the corrision is limited to the photograhs?

You could just cut the rot from the top edge and let in new steel.

The question is what does the bottom of the panel look like? as this is usually the first part to go.

If the bottoms gone AND the top, then yes, it would probably be easier to replace the entire quarter panel.

I will put money on the waist rail being crispy as well.

You could cut the rot out and use a section from another quarter panel because of the shape BUT you will have to be very careful of warping the quarter.

Hey thanks for the replies!

Can someone elaborate to me what a waist rail is?

And in event of....quarter panel replacement. Big job?

Assuming kurust isn't the ideal here then!

Thanks.

The waist rail is the panel at the top of the rear quarter on the inside where the window sits

Thanks Rocket.

Am I to clarify guys, the 'KURUST TO AN INCH OF ITS LIFE AND FILL IT" technique is almost a futile one?

I suppose in this instance common sense prevails.

If it's just surface rust kurust would be okay

But If there's a hole it's to far gone the only real way of fixing it is new metal

It's very pitted, therefore it's not just surface rust.

You could kurust it, but you'll be visiting the area again.

Do it once, do it right

Yep, if pitted replace. The metal is thin to start with (0.9mm) thick so by the time you grind it out you will either go through or it will be wafer thin.
