hi guys,

a previous owner had put a union jack on the white roof of the car, i decided to take them off as they didn't look great and underneath it's left a yellow/off white stain.

i had a quick go over with some polish to see if that helped but it hasn't. it's only very slight but you can see it if you get closer.

any ways to get rid of this staining or residue? or will i have to respray my roof?

cheers

Try a fine cutting compound, you cant really do any damage if you are applying it by hand or even DA polisher.

was told that meguires do a good one. have found their ultra cut compound, removes 1200 grit scratches or finer, would that do?

the only polish i have at the moment is autoglym deep shine stuff which i dont think will do it

You might find that it's not a stain and that it's just that the roof under the decals has been protected from the sun and the rest of the roof has faded.
I get it on surfboards that come in to my workshop with stickers on them.

cool, well ill try some of the above stated polish if you think that would be enough, and if its the rest of the roof thats faded would that method still work or will it have faded all the way through the paint?

dont really have the money at the moment to have it resprayed professionally or the time to do it myself what with work. if the polish doesnt work itll have to wait i think. its not massively obvious at a glance or from a little distance, but i know its there now haha

I would try megiuars ultimate compound, preferably on a da, but you could do it by have with a micro fibre cloth.

You could maybe look at vinyl wrapping the roof?

id rather have it painted properly, as ive seen some horrible rust happen underneath wraps. so if it doesnt polish out then ill live with a minor imperfection which most people wont notice untill ive saved a little bit of money

Just to get a roof sprayed shouldn't cost a huge amount anyway.

Ok, how much do we think as a rough estimate? Assuming there are no issues with the metal underneath? Ive ordered some of the polish so will give it a go when if gets here, if it doesnt work then ill keep it in the garage and use it anyway so wont lose out.

I used brake cleaner to remove the glue left on there when I removed the chequers then used farecla G3 and a Maguiars DA then some Super resin polish.

My Mini was still showing the union jack decal that had faded the paint around it,even after being sanded with 180 grit, right git to flat it out.

Now my roof is reacting to paint, and my painter thinks the union jack may have been masking something, the plot still thickens.
