Headlights And Dash Flash On When Braking! Help!

So...driving her home from work today and seems OS brake is not working as she's leaping to the left....
Next I discover...every time I DO break I'm flashing the headlights and the dash light round the clock comes on! Bizarre!!!! Lift off pedal....switches off again.
Anyone got the slightest clue why my little 83 Mayfair has now become a flasher???
I'm crap at electrics so any advice would be great!
Thanks,

Yes earthing problem time to inspect all the earth wires in the boot if the brakelights are causing it.

Sounds like there could be other issues if it can reverse flow enough juice to light headlights.

Thanks Guys,
The only thing with the braking that's annoying is when I brake people think i'm flashing them to say hello or that they can pull out!!! ![]()
Looked in the boot, and with my Haynes to try work out the earthing points i'm looking for.
Would they be on the back of the lights? Again any help HUGELY appreciated!
Thanks,

Black wires, 4 from memory, attached with the fuel tank strap.

I would suspect the brake light switch more than the earthing, or a short between its wiring and the lighting circuit.

Check the bulbs in the brake light holder and make sure they're double pole if you fitted a single pole it will feed power back through the light circuit. Check the brake lights when you turn on the headlights and see if the brake lights comes on too.

Run a test earth wire from the rear light connection of earth wires direct to the battery negative or provide a earth if you have a sealey tester will prove the earth issue or not
