hello

have seen in the guides about welding rods to tighten panel gaps. I have just reskinned the drivers door on my mini and found the gaps are all fairly good apart from the front of the door where it meets the apanel needs approx 3-4mm adding to the metal. i have tried running a bead a weld part way down the door to try it, but saw the welding rod technique.

forgive my ignorance but is it just a case of welding the rod to the door and grinding it to panel gap desired then finish with filler?

are any arc rods suitable obviously to the right thickness as seen on the guide?

I've just done this and the door hinge caught the door as the gap was big and took a bit of trimming of the hinge.

Don't use arc rods, I used these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300447498179

I tacked them in place, then seam welded both sides, grind back, then a skim of filler.

As slow as you can, keep it as cool as possible.

I did a bit of work around the lock on the other side too

will be slow as dont want to warp the skin. I have had to shim the door to create the nice even tight gap on the lock side. and I had to gently persuade the frame to sit on the door seal so not to bad. So long as i get the hinge side right with these rods.

I did the same on my clubman but tacked the metal rod onto the a panel instead of the nice new heritage doorskin. I felt there would be less potential warpage on the smaller a panel instead of the larger doorskin.
