I think this has been asked before on here but I just want to check before pulling pipes out.

On the attached picture, is the circled pipe where I can connect a Vacuum gauge to?

If so does that existing pipe just pull straight off with brute force?

Thanks,

That's for distributor vacuum advance and might be too small in diameter. But it will pull off then you need a t-piece to connect gauge in.

On my old A35 I had a plate between SU carb and inlet and fitting in that. But that was in 70s!

As stated above, don't use the vacuum advance take off from the carb, use the carb spacer with the barbed nipple.

A vacuum gauge is meant to monitor manifold vacuum, not ported vacuum.  The carb spacer will connect to manifold vacuum.  The connection on the carb connection can be for ported vacuum which means it is monitoring the vacuum in the carb venturi, not what you want.

I've installed one of those spacers this morning. Previously it was on the distributor advance and it didn't read right at all.

Easy!

Unbolt carb and remove gaskets and old spacer

Clean up gasket surfaces

Install new gaskets and spacer plate

Connect rubber vacuum hose.

My new vacuum spacer wasn't completely flat, so I used some wet and dry and a flat surface to sand it smooth.

Thanks for the info, I'm just looking at ordering one of those on minispares, but there is more than one type depending on what type of carburetor is fitted.

What sort would mine be? Its a 1979 850 engine.

The HS2 or 1 1/4" carb has the bolt holes vertically and a skinnier top on the dashpot.

The HS4 or 1 1/2" carb has them on an angle

It could also be something else entirely as minis get changed around all the time!
