I've just finished setting up twin hs2's and The engine is lively and revs perfectly all the way up to the red line but after reinstalling my pancake filters I can barely get to 5k. Do I have an air restriction? Or are the air filters just altering the mixture.

The air filters will affect the mixture

This pancakes do restrict air flow and hence a richer mixture, have you rechecked the mixture with the filters on?

An air filter will create a restriction so that for a given amount of fuel, less air will be able to mix with it. Hence you ending up with a richer mixture.

I would personally be getting it on a rolling road and get them set up with correct needles etc.

What make of pancake filters are you using?

If they are the shiny chrome ones with wire wool insides then you'll be doing well to make any decent power at 5000rpm. Plus they are pretty useless at keeping out anything smaller than a 1/4 nut...

A pair of decent K&Ns with stub stacks will flow and filter effectively.

And cost you as well, decent K&Ns and stub stacks will set you back £240 for the pair.

Owing a mini - more honest than saying Owning a mini

You often get K&Ns coming up second hand. .

With a good wash and re-oiling they can work as good as new...

They are indeed the el cheapo foam rubber shiny ones. I'm selling the car next month so I just need it to look pretty for now when you open the bonnet. I leaned it off, gapped and cleaned the plugs throttle response much better and can just about make it up to 5300 rpm which for an auto is plenty! Probably if I had a rolling road and access to every needle out there in my back garden I would get it sorted. But for now I'm happy!

Anyone got any other words of wisdom whilst I'm here? New to this whole carb thing as I was an injection guy originally. (My SPI system never got above 4500rpm due to dodgy wiring and sensors from the previous owner!)

Noted. Thanks!

Also fixed my all issues today with idling etc, pulled the carbs as I wanted to fix the lifting pins which were seized when I bought the carbs. Turns out I had multiple air leaks, one of my jets weren't centred and my piston oil level was low. All stuff I thought I checked but I guess there's nothing like a good tune up!

Now got the issue of finding some way to attach the kickdown to the throttle. Making my auto painfully slow.
