I bought a new complete exhaust for my Daughter's 1976 Mini 1000 and haven't been able to stop it blowing out of the join with the manifold. I've tried fire putty on the two halves and also put some on the clip but it's still blowing quite badly. The clamp is a pair of semi circular clips which hook together and the have a bolt holding them together. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next! Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks, Paul.

There should be two "bolts" holding the clamp together
With the clamp out of the way.....does the down pipe fit nicely over the manifold?  The down pipe should be flared out slightly and the manifold fit's within it.
The clamp can be fiddly...just when you think it lines up and you release your grip to tighten....it slips a little.

Try sliding a jack under neath and slightly lift up on the down pipe once they are aligned.....this will hold it in place and free both hands to deal with the clamp....making sure it is gripping both parts.

I would buy a cast clamp. These are much stronger and should clamp up tighter. Did the exhaust blow straight away or after driving? Have you fitted the exhaust to gearbox bracket as this prevents the exhaust from working it's way loose.

I will try the jack to see if I can get the exhaust tighter. The original exhaust wasn't blowing but the back box had gone so I had to replace it. Like always it was fine and now it's blowing arghhh

The clamp is a two part cast clamp with one bolt and the gearbox clamp is there and is done up tightly.

Cheers, Paul.

you can get a two part cast clamp with two bolts, one either side which clamp better.

i found best way was to remove exhaust, make sure the flange is clean and apply exhaust paste to the inner face of the flange where it contacts the manifold.

the re hang exhaust loosely. use a jack to for the flange tightly against the manifold and then you can either clamp up as is or apply paste the the clamp havles the clamp up. then tighten all the hangers, starting with the one on the gearbox working backwards.

Both the twin bolt and the single bolt clamps work perfectly well - as long as the single bolt type hasn't been over tightened !

Clean both surfaces, apply a smear of exhaust paste (or thinned down fire cement) to the pipe flange and jack up the pipe in position till the engine is being lifted on it's mountings.
Do up the bottom steady bar, then attach the clamp to the joint.

The clamp DOESN'T pull the two surfaces together, it merely prevents them from coming apart.

Okay I'll pull it off at the weekend and start again. Maybe I just didn't have the exhaust pushed up hard enough. I'll try jacking it up as suggested.

I tried not to over tighten the clamp and bend it when I fitted it.

Thanks, Paul.

just to be sure, you are loosening the gearbox clamp before doing up the manifold clamp?

My clamp looks as though it's symmetrical? It only has a single bolt and the other end is a hook and a hole

Yes the gearbox clamp wasn't fitted when I did the other clamp up.
