Hi,

I want to upgrade my 1998 MPi with a stage3 kit (+-80ps).

I was wondering if I need to upgrade the cooling system as well? any suggestions as I can only find the standard front mount radiator on minispares...

Regards Sam

shouldnt need to, all the components in the mpis including the ECU are rated for up to about 90 bhp, however fueling may need to be altered with a chip. like everything else being too cool it can actually be detrimental.

VMAXSCART do a cooling system for the mpi if you do want to go down that route.

Hi mate, the rad will cope unless you drive it on a track, also you cant alter the fueling on these cars and don't expect 80 bhp, my 90bhp cooper works was rolling roaded at 72bhp and was lean all the way through the revs and it of puff at 5200rpm. Thief kit will make a difference, but if you can stretch you budget aim for specialist components 5 port kit as well. Mines in on a rolling road session today to fine trek it but just from making on the road with a mate we Got it up from 72 to 87.6 bhp. Good luck

however you gan get a fuel pressure regulator from stuart at vmax which is fitted ti the cooper S to adjust the fueling to allow for the bhp increase :)

Chip? You can't alter the MEMS, the fuelling is mechanically controlled with a pressure regulator.

although only allows you to adjust ignition timing(i said fuel i was wrong, i meant timing but fuel pressure regulator was on the brain) and is not really worth it for the bhp gains but still.....its a chip

After reading this thread

http://www.theminifo...336-super-chip/

I believe despite it sayin chip it is a whole new ignition module that advances or retards ignition by -5 or +5 degrees.

Although back to the original question, I do not think you would have to upgrade your cooling system if you was to aim for 90bhp. I have seen people using Mpi radiators on 160bhp K series conversions, so you should be fine.

EDIT.

I have seen some people using Fiat Chiquinto Radiators on some other forums, I think they have a noticeably larger surface area to aid with cooling and are very affordable. I don't think they fit with the standard alternator though.
