Hi Guys,

I have just bought a 1985 Mini MayFair, with a 1275 engine. I'm a bit of a noob to mini restoration, but am giving it a go :D

The guy I bought the car from wasn't sure if the engine needed lead additive, so was adding some anyway. Does anyone know if it is necessary for this engine?

From an engine number ID search, this is the info I get back:

Source Vehicle : Mini Cooper Carbed
Engine type & CC : A+ 1275 cc Transverse mounted
Fueling : HIF44 FZX1531, BFY Needle, Red Spring
Engine features : 10.1:1 Compression Ratio
Servo Assisted Brakes
95 RON Unleaded Petrol
Open Loop Catalyst
Pre-engaged starter
Gearbox features : Std. Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints
3.105:1 Final Drive

I am assuming that the '95 RON Unleaded Petrol' is the give away... but whats the 95 RON? Would there have been any damage to the engine by adding additive if it is unleaded?

Thanks in advance,

Richey

You don't need lead additive for this engne, it says 95 Ron unleaded fuel amongst those details, also it's a+ which all ran on unleaded fuel I believe

Ok, thanks. Would running lead additive through it have damaged anything?

To the best of my knowledge Unleaded was only introduced in UK in 1986 so you may need to do some more digging. A bit unusual that the previous owner didn't know what type of petrol was required.

Is the fact that it has a catalyst not an indication that it should be unleaded?

A 1985 Mayfair should be 998cc so someone has dropped in a Cooper carb engine circa 1990. If a cat is fitted do not add lead. Check your insurance policy covers this modification.

Ok, nice one. Next question, what oil should I be using in it?

Cheers
