Recently replaced my heater matrix so want to make sure this is expected behaviour.. During the MOT the tester had a warm up the car to get it through the emissions test, obviously the car got very hot and the temp gauge sat just over half way, but the car was very hot inside and the pipes to the matrix were hot. When the heater valve is in the closed/off/cold position does this stop the flow of water back through the matrix or should it stop water getting to it at all? I presumed when it was closed at least one of the pipes should be cooler? Could it be that the pipes on the matrix are the wrong way round. Would that matter?

Cheers :)

Assuming you have the new plastik heater tap the pipe from the engine should go to this ,then through the matrix to the radiater. When the switch is pushed in the heater tap is off and stops any hot water running to the matrix.

I had the same question the other day, but you've put it better. My heater matrix seems to heat up regardless of whether the switch is in or out. I've also checked the cable moves the switch - I'm wondering if the switch is broken on mine.

Just a quick update, disconnected the pipe that connects to the heater valve to see if it was operating and it appeared to be very slightly open when it was in the fully closed/cold position in the car, this was due to the lever stopping when it was hitting the rear jubilee clip! rather than it being fully closed.. twisted the jubilee round and moved the cable clip so its now fully closed in the close position.

School boy error :)

Cheers
