Want to try my engine before i fit it,not that i don't trust my first time engine building skills...but ![]()
what wiring do i need?
will just filling the fuel pot on the carb work?
any other hints tips always greatfully received

Coil - starter-gravity feed to the carb,
But I'm not sure what you'll prove - oil the bores, compression test it, then spin it over and make sure you pick up oil pressure - other than that, put it in the car and drive it.
You'll do more harm than good if you've installed a new cam and don't run it in properly.

thanks..only new bits in it are bearings and thrust washers,it was just stripped and cleaned.it has never run since i've owned it(around 10years) just thought it might be an idea to try it before i fit it just in case and the van is just about a rolling shell right now so i'm a fair way off sticking it in and trying it that way

Hi
2 way to do this
1 for quick start only run for 30 seconds only
wire from coil - side to dissy another wire from the + side to battery + side use crock clip at battery end
that is the ignition setup
jump lead from - side of battery to some were on motor
jump lead from + side of battery to big pin that comes out of starter when you connect that there will be sparks and motor will spin
disconnect as soon as motor starts at starter motor end
fule run a pipe from small can hold above to carb suck on pipe to get petrol to pipe at card end
thats all you need to do
2
if you want to run for more time put rad and fan belt on fill rad
job done

If you do this - sit it on a rubber floor mat - otherwise they have a habit of moving around
and prepare for more noise than when in the car
if you rev it , be prepared to hold on to it , as torque reaction could roll it over (found out the hard way)
best of luck

cheers..was planing to bolt it to the work bench by the engine steady point just to make sure

Have recently rebuilt an engine and run it out of the car without any issues, just make sure the engine cannot fall over though in reality it won't in fact it hardly moves at all even when revving, only movement is on initial start up and that is minimal after all it does weigh in at around 330lb.
My biggest priority was getting the electrics right, made a little box up in the end with 3 switch's in it, power on/off, feed to coil on/off and a momentary switch to turn the engine over and 2 lights, one for oil pressure and the other for alternator output (Oil pressure initially checked with a calibrated analogue gauge) so I had no issues with flashing all connections were secure. Made a point of making sure the fuel can was outside of the garage this meant having a hose long enough about eight feet in my case. Would post some pictures of my set up but can't get Photo bucket to work. As far as the fuel supply is concerned you may as well go via the fuel pump then you know that is working correctly too and there is no more work involved.
Went down my local exhaust fitter and scrounged an old silencer fitted the rad and added coolant, blanked off the servo vacuum and as the heater was not connected put a hose in going from the sandwich plate to the heater hose connection at the bottom hose Biggest pain in the arse was having to remove the battery from my everyday transport and then having to re set everything.
From my point of view if like myself you are a beginner then it far easier to set the engine up with it out of the car I had a couple of very small oil leaks the one would have required the engine to be removed to rectify (had to remove diff casing) end result is the engine runs extremely well had no other issues. Did pm one very knowledgeable person on here (An engine builder) before going through with it just to make sure I was doing things correctly, his advice was invaluable regarding the initial run in procedure.
When fitted engine will be going on Aldons rolling road.
Hope this helps

It will run, can't fail but to run. If you're looking to sniff out oil leaks etc, prepare to get it hot for at least a couple of cycles.
If you've built it up with care and in clean conditions then you'll be fine

After rebuilding my 970, I started it out of the car to make sure no oil or water leaked. Here is a video link to it.

Jumper cables to the starter via solenoid, small jumper wire for coil and electric fuel pump, hose from filler of Mini fuel tank to inlet of pump, hose from pump to carb, oil pressure gauge. Engine full of water and oil(no heater ).I set up mixture, idle and ignition timing like this.
