Tighten Rear Brakes

Best Answer RedRuby , 22 July 2014 - 11:41 AM

When you say tighten the rear brakes, do you mean adjusting the brake shoes or tightening the handbrake? If you mean adjusting the brake shoes, jack the rear up and remove the road wheel, make sure it's well supported with jacks and axle stands. Remove the small screw on the front of the brake from then at the back of the wheel hub you will find a small square adjusting nut, undo that so that it releases the brake shoes and you can remove the drum. Inspect the brake shoes for wear, look for any sins of leaks on the wheel cylinder and check the handbrake linking to see if it is free moving. Brush out any dust and replace the drum refit the securing screw. Then using the adjusting nut keep turning it until the brake shoes bit on the drum so that you cannot turn it by hand, then back the adjuster nut off probably one or two turns until the drum rotates again, it may feel as though the sloes are binding slightly but that is ok.
