Lookies what I just bought!!!
[attachment=17367:attachment]

Ok ignore the manifold, as thats from a bettle, but the carbs :D
I have just got myself a as new IDF44 Carb, rebuilt by a weber agent, and never ran since, for a few bob!!

This is the start of my "custom" build ^_^

Hence the following;

Right thinking of sticking some pipes onto my IDF44...

I have noticed that they can come in 3 different sizes!

30mm, 45mm and 60mm.
The engine its sat on is a;
MSPD trackday head
1330
286 cam
GT box
3.44 FD

Now, as this engine will eventully become my everyday motor... I was wondering what sort of size pipes I should need to get?

I do like the look of the pipes poking out of the bonnet, but I also like some torque... so its a comparmise I'd like to discuse with u guys.....

What shall I try first?

Cheers
p.s. Yes this enigne will be RR once I get some pipes to strat with!

You sure you can get a proper manifold for that? Stick it on a 5-6" lond manifold for best results.

What size ram pipes? It depends how much you want them stickin out of the bonnet mate! :D

The IDF being a downdraft and an unusual choice for the mini, you may be looking at a custom manifold too. I would talk to someone like Maniflow to see what manifolds are available first. You know what size chokes they come with?

EDIT: Isn't the IDF float bowl designed for inline engines rather than transverse? Maybe a DCNF or IDA would be better for an A series if you really want to go for a downdraft

A Manifold isn't a problem to be honest, I have plans on how to make one, or if push comes to shove, ask maniflow.

The IDF is designed for as you say, Inline engines, But from looking at them, I can't see any reason how they can't be adpated to work on the tranverse engine.

The reason I ask about ram pipe lenth, not only because I want it to stick out of my bonnet, but I know it also affects the caricteristcs of the engine, hence this thread....

I'd have a look at the kits that MED do for the 40 and 45 DCOE, they have a short full radius stub stack (or whatever the correct terminology is). The problem is that there won't be much research done with this carb fitted to a mini. You could always look at what the Beetle boys use with them, but that may not correlate with the same setup on a mini.

Well its actully off Volkworld forum!

I think looking at the "basic" charictistics of the carb, the longer the pipe, the more power I am going to get from the carb lower down in the rev range, well not more power, most most torque at a certian rpm.

For example, I can get 1.5", 2.5", or 5" long ram pipes, for the 44.

After some detailed searching on google, it seem if I fitted a 5", not only will it stick out of the bonnet along way, but it will also help with torque. I should see peak torque around 4-5k rpm, with a 5" pipe, but them, thats on a standerd 1275 cam, I havn't worked it out for a Kent 286 cam.

Cheers anyways fellas, seems I need to look out for a bell-mouthed 5" long IDF44 ram pipe...... (Going to be a long serach!!)
