Flushing Coolant System - Engine Out

I would probably do it both ways to be honest. Gets anything out that'll only go one way.

I recently purchased a new engine to go in my pickup. While it is out I gave it a quick clean up to remove the worst of the crap from all over it but I’m wondering if it is worth flushing through the coolant system as well? Obviously there I no radiator or heater attached so I just planned to stick a hose pipe in at the thermostat housing (there is no thermostat fitted at the moment) and letting it come out where it will (I guess from the water pump). Before I try this am I missing something obvious or about to do something really stupid without realising it?

It's a good idea to flush out the engine with a hosepipe, run it through until the water coming out looks almost the same as the water going in.

I have heard that back flushing is better so water in at the bottom and out at the top.

Could be wrong though....
