So gone up the workshop and got the mini fired up after being stood for 5 months, it's had a stage 1 fitted so the carb has been taken off. Replaced the fuel lines in the process. The first leak was the float but after taking it off and cleaning it, it's no longer leaking. Great! Start it up, give it a few revs and the smell of petrol comes back, and appears to be coming out the carb to inlet manifold, any ideas?

Double check the float valve again.  The valve itself has to provide a positive shut off and the float level has to be set correctly.  As you already know, if the valve is not shutting properly you can pump excess fuel either out of the overflow or into the carb throat.  If the valve is only leaking a tiny bit, this may be concealed at idle as fuel is being used.  However, when you turn the engine off the little bit of extra fuel in the fuel lines (above the float bowls) can drain into the float bowls, overfill them, with the excess fuel coming out of the jet.
