Can anyone with a keen ear say if my engine sounds ok in this video? I'm not sure if I can hear a knocking noise from it or I'm just being paranoid. It runs ok and gives good oil pressure. Engine has always been a bit rattley, but as this is my first Mini I've nothing to really compare it against.

Short video I know, I had very little memory left.

Sounds to me like the tappets need adjusting.. Well it's what mine sound like when they have gone out of adjustment.

Don't forget the A Series is quite a tappy engine compared to more modern engines.

A Mini specialist mechanic told me the timing chain was rattling, but they very rarely snap so it wasn't worth replacing it until something else requires the engine to be opened up.

I believe 850s don't use a timing chain tensioner so they can be a bit rattley in that respect. Of course make sure your tappets are adjusted correctly and your oil is in good order. (20w50)

Thanks for the advice chaps. I best learn to adjust the tappets then.

No one hears anything to troubling in that video then?

+1 on tappets & oil condition - but unless I'm there - it's only a guess

if you can hear another tap after doing the tappets

get a long bit of dowel / bar , with engine running (so be careful )

place one end on a non moving non electrical part of the engine & other end to the bit of skin in front of the ear

it should help you locate any noises - be careful not to touch anything moving or electrical

or get a stethoscope

& all I can hear is timing chain - tappets - possibly idler gears - all standard mini noises

I now consider tappet noise - the heart beat of a mini
