Hi is it possible to remove the engine block to fit some pistons without taking out the gearbox? I ask because I don't have my crane at the moment and I need to get started on this engine.

Another thing, I bought some second hand pistons on rods for my girlfriend as she doesn't want to shell out for omegas. I don't really want to use them but I have been told! I am a little concerned about the wearing on them. Is this just a normal wear pattern or is it signs of a dying engine? obviously will be replacing rings and she'll bearings. Any advice would be appreciated

All 4 are like this and are pretty much the same

It'd be a lot easier to remove the engine. I imagine unbolting the block from the box would be interesting to say the least. That's after you've removed the wok, flywheel, clutch, transfer case etc all in situ

You do really have to lift the engine & gearbox out of the car.

In theory it is possible to take the block off of the gearbox, but to do this means jacking the engine & gearbox up, removing the clutch cover, pulling the clutch & flywheel, removing the radiator, taking off all the ancillaries, getting underneath to remove all the engine/gearbox bolts then lifting the block off of the gearbox. It would be a very fiddly job and a crane would still be best to lift the block as it's heavy.

You say your girlfriend doesn't want to pay for omega pistons. Why exactly does she need them, what is the spec of the engine?

998 turbo, at first it was going to be running at 15psi then I told her the standard pistons weren't up to it so it's more like 7psi untill it gets rebuilt again

You can hire an engine crane for 2 days for 60 quid, or get on ebay and see if you can pick one up. People aren't usually willing to post them on ebay so they don't fetch huge money

I have a crane. But it's in my workshop 60 miles away, my garage at home isnt big enough to house it and the mini is immobile. Cheers for the replies, not used to transverse engines and the clutch didn't even occur to me. Looks like I'm going to have to rig something up with a chain winch

I remember being a team of three who lifted one out once because of lack of engine hoist! Can be done (but I was fitter in those days!)

I'm in saffron walden.

Haha I did think of that, I can lift one by my self but only enough to move it a little. Couldn't lift it out of the hole lol

Like I say I'll just have to rig up a chain winch. Any input on the pistons?

Looking at those pistons I certainly wouldn't use them even for a standard build. They have quite a bit of scuff, but the real limitation is that they have long oil slots which reduce the strength of the piston in higher power output engines.

I suspect that if you do fit them you will be looking at a further engine out after a very short period.

Have you done the necessary calculations for forced induction? It is not as simple as just bolting a turbo-charger onto the original engine.  The geometric compression ratio is critical and the distributor MUST have a very different advance curve to avoid detonation and rapid piston failure.

The cost of buying the correct pistons is minor compared with the rest of the build if you are to do it properly.

The compression ratio with those pistons and the head ect were 8.4:1 which would have been ok for 15psi

Have all the bits for the conversion apart from a fuel pressure regulator, oil cooler and oil pump. Engine needs to come out so I can start making the stainless manifold as the turbo will be sitting over the clutch cover.

Cheers for that looks like she will have to get some better ones.
