A couple of times recenyly I start the engine and the pressure sits at 25psi, its normally about 75.  On odd occasions also when driving the pressure will drop to 25 and then after half an hour back to 75

I suspect the relief valve, I have the ball and spring type.  Do I buy and new ball and spring or go for the plunger and spring type

I tried ball & spring, caused me a lot of grief.

Have used the standard plunger & spring ever since.

Plunger and spring for me too! I had bought a genuine item which was badly machined(luckily too large on the spring face!) I filed it down very carefully and its been fine since(i changed it in october) the car is my 1275 sprite (1993 car with factory fitted carb)

At any point when you took the readings was the engine hot as this will obviously have an effect on oil pressure. You are probably best off changing it as you said. I have had no problems with the ball, but the plunger does seem to be the preferred choice.
