Dim Dip Headlight Problem. Help!

Best Answer Mr Thirty , 05 August 2014 - 08:24 AM

When I was advised to connect blue/red and blue/brown, I thought he meant part blue part red wire part brown part blue wire
Not connect EITHER the blue to brown or red to blue. Took a second look at the post and connected the correct wires confirming it was indeed the relay.
My dad said that it could POTENTIALLY be unsafe, and advised I replace it when I'm more flush. I'm not worried personally. I know there are some very experienced users on this forum and a few confirmation from the veterans is good enough for me. Much appreciated Go to the full post

I lost my dipped headlights and could only get dimmed lights.

I got another switch, same again.

When i flick the indicator stalk forward i get full beam just fine.

i've been reading other people's posts who've had the same problem.

they are recommended to replace the pink relay.

Is there a test i can do with a Multimeter to determine if it is the relay for certain? and not

a loose wire or bad contact behind the switch. Just had to pay for a new exhaust mani and a tyre so would like to avoid buying the relay in the hope that it is indeed bust.

Thank you, Mr Thirty

Simply remove the relay and join the Blue/brown wire to the Blue/red wire then the unit becomes completely redundant,

Yes its safe it was only introduced so you could not drive on sidelights, but it was dropped and most cars have been modified, as per the link wire in the above picture by Kieran

So it's only to stop me driving on sidelights?
What has changed for it to kick in? Or has it just broken.
I'm curious, In what circumstances would it cut my dipped headlights? Thanks for the replies guys, saved me £20. Up most respect

"What it does is when your side lights are on and the ignition, the headlights are also switched on automatically by the relay (this is the big pink thing behind the dash ). The resistor (the brass thing on the n/s end of the bulkhead ) is used to 'dim' the headlights in this condition so they are not on full power at start up."

I guess this is right, found elsewhere.
Leave the resister alone when bypassing? And remove old relay

Yes just do the mod on the relay as above, it was only done to stop people driving on sidelights and dropped quicker than it was introduced and never made law.

I've done as intructed and by-passed the relay. Still not change. Does this mean there is a connection problem somewhere between switch and relay?
Thanks

The problem is most likely to be in the bundle of bullet connectors under the slam panel, the one with blue/red wiring is for the dipped lamps. It probably needs to all come apart and be cleaned up.

Slam panel? As in behind the grill, I've been told they are connected there and should be checked

"slam" or bonnet landing panel, same thing - what the top of the grille screws to.

Dan may well be right that it's resistance elsewhere. Turn just your sidelights on, with the ignition, then flick the light switch to headlights 'n see if you can notice any difference in brightness.
