My fuel gauge doesn't appear to be working. I have the spi electric pump. It was working but now just reads nothing. I put a volt meter to the side of the tank (where the little spade connectors attach and they are reading about 5v. I also looked behind the dash and its all good. Any ideas. I've checked all the fuses I can find but I don't know if there is one specifically for it I can only see the fuel pump one.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers Toby

Does your fuel gauge work? Take the lead off the fuel tank and earth it. If the gauge goes to the top then I suspect a sender unit issue.

As Badboy said, the quick test is to earth the sending unit wire.

Turn the ignition switch to the run position.  Disconnect the green/black wire from the sending unit and hold it to earth (hold it to either a bare metal spot or to the sending unit terminal with the black wire).  With the green/black wire earthed and the ignition on the gauge should go to full.  The gauge going to full with the green/black wire earthed suggests a problem with the sending unit.

Sending unit replair is by replacement.

Yep sorry forgot to mention the fuel gauge works when it is shorted. I put a ohmeter on it this morning. Reading about 500 ohms intermently with a just less than half full tank. So I suppose next stage is removal. It will take me about 3 weeks to get a replacement sender in so I'm hoping I may be able to get something out of it so I can at least use the car for now.

How do you remove this thing, do you pry it out?

Thanks
Toby
