Hi Guys,

As i'm sure you all know, The Cooper car company are back - ;D

I'm interested in fitting a tuning kit to my SPI mini. I have a stage one kit already ( no cat ) and it makes 69 BHP at the fly wheel so a small, but good improvement up from 61 BHP prior to fitting ( i know mine was a little down on standard 63 Bhp )

Has anyone fitted one yet and if so.. please share your results.

Many thanks

Garth

if its the performance you want you could probably do it for 1/2 that cost, but if you want the Cooper badging.......

Some you are saying I'm paying a huge premium to have the Cooper genuine factor ?

Yep! I must admit though, the black Maniflow setup looks pretty sweet. Too bad you won't see it anyway.

I guess the upside is that it would be a unique and genuine cooper conversion - but then... it could be argued that unless it was fitted at cooper garages its still just aftermarket parts..

The JC conversion kits from the early 90s were often fitted by Rover dealers. The fact that many were not converted by JCG does not appear to affect the value.

In the longer term, as later Minis become classics, I think the added value of a genuine Cooper conversion will easily offset the investment cost while non-period modifications might even devalue the car. The newly reintroduced Cooper head is as originally designed for the 90s kits and is not, as some think, a rebadged Mini Sport one.

but then again, in this day and age people know what they are looking for in "fast road" mini specs, and may prefer the value of someone who has researched the best for their car than just slapping a cooper works on, which have stuff like an oil cooler which isnt really needed.

at the end of the day its the brand u pay for like desitgner clothes.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree except John Cooper and Jan Odor (Janspeed) probably had researched as well as anyone what was best for a fast road Mini. Cooper was great at creating a brand following their Formula One successes but there is a heritage and knowledge that gives it substance. Sure you can add the value you want to your car but it isn't necessarily a monetary one. It depends on whether you just want the here-and-now at the lowest cost or the future investment. I can see both points of view.

Yeah really interesting points guys and one that I really do agree with ( both sides )  What also adds value to having a genuine JCC fiitted is here in sunny Australia a nice Rover mini will cost you upwards of $15,000 AUD and a mint one 20-25,000 so the values are alot more than the UK or europe for that matter. We have no rust issues here with our Minis ( unless you live right on the beach ) so most are in rust free condition but then mechanically the average owners spends more keeping them running well.

So having a JCC rover Cooper would be a very nice and rare things... Hmmm.......

OzCooper- tell me about the prices here in OZ, hence why I'm trying to get my UK MPI imported over, but yeah, for a mint Rover it can get expensive, when they do turn up!

Unless someone well qualified is going to do a good job fitting your new toys, I'd honestly look at gathering the bits up myself.

But your right, having the 'official' kit would be a nice thing.

I'm hitting the stage with my Japanese SPI of replacing every seal/rubber  item on the thing because a life here in Australia takes it toll in different ways on these cars.

Thanks

The importation rules have changed twice in Australia - For about 4 years you could no longer import Rover minis unless on a personal importation certificate. I believe you had to own the car for 12 month or more first but this might of changed. When I lived in Europe I owned a 1997 MPI Cooper ( i bought in new of the showroom floor ) and was going to bring that back with me in about 2003 I think it was but it all proved to hard... However, alot of this was as my car was a LHD so had to be converted and that was expensive.. and the rust....

I have been offered $20,000+ for my current Cooper multiple times so the value is there. The other thing to consider here is finding a Mini Garage that actually LIKE Rover Minis... most don't ! Its a strange thing but hey. My garage Mini Classics is great. He knows Rover Minis inside out and in chating with him last week I asked him about fitting the Cooper conversion and he recons it will only improve things a bit... but not $3000 worth.
