my engine is quite dirty due to built up old oil and a rag that was shredded when it was caught wrapped around the fan belt... i think i actually heard the fan say "Yummy!" as it shredded it to nothing but fluff.
I did remove as much as the fluffy stuff as i could with a low powered hoover, but really want to get it nice and clean. I'm talking the 10 or so years of ol and dirt that has built up. Would be nice to see what colour the block is.... LOL
What does everyone think is the best way to do this?
I'm not too keen right now on taking the whoile think apart, but do have a steam cleaner and engine cleaning spray.

if you've got access to a steam cleaner then this should be relatively simple. I usually use 'gunk' or similar. You can mix gunk with boiled water or use it neat. I normally put it in a squirty bottle thingy and then give the engine a good soaking and leave over night to soak in. Then you can normally clean it with a hose pipe and a washing up brush jobby although a steam cleaner is ifinately better. Just be sure to bung up any holes where water may get in the oil etc. (like the dipstick hole) and also it may be worth wrapping a plastic bag or sumat round you're air filter and any electronic stuff (alarms, ecu etc.)

I was considering cleaning my engine sometime soon. So cover electrics, filter and oil dipstick. Anything else?
Has anyone got a pic of all the right bits covered?

wrap the dizzy too, don't want it getting too wet if you can avoid it, alternatively take it out, just make a note of the angle it was in at so you can keep the timing right.
I like a clean engine, you can see if you have any oil leaks that way!

If you run the engine untill it is nice and warm , the oil and grease will come off easier , and i once had great sucsess cleaning an engine with a cleaner that was meant for cleaning ovens and grills

don't know whats wrong with all you Europeans but whenever my engine is dirty I just soak it down with heavy duty engine degreaser..."707" and then pressure wash the hell out of it.
