I had to modify the stay bar by cutting it and cutting treads and making a threaded sleeve so I could adjust it to fit. The original arm was from my 998 engine that mounted on the thermostat bracket differently than the 970 due to different stud orientation .

I thought the bracket that bolted to the thermostat housing went on top of the alloy housing not below??

Hang on, got confused there for a moment. The photos aren't of the offending item.

i was thinking the same, that'd bring the bracket up enough to clear everything

I've not had a chance to do it today but I'll have a proper look tomorrow as I have the day off, as for the water leak though I remember when I last took off the door card on that side the back of the door card on the wood was all wet so I'm pretty sure there's some water coming in through there somehow

So the photo isn't of the problem?

That's what it looks like, and as you can also see there's plenty of room between the fan and the rad

Do you have any spacers between the fan and the pulley?

If not then that would solve the problem i reckon.  Failing that, maybe 'modify' the termostat bracket.

I can't quite tell by look to be honest, was going to take the rad out later and have a proper look at what's going on there

Your fan is missing the spacer (http://minispares.co...fan spacer.aspx) it should sit much deeper into the radiator/fan cowling than it does in the pictures.  It would fix your clearance issue and improve cooling. Oh and it would be less likely to take your fingers off.
