Above is the best description I can manage via a keyboard, of a noise my Mini is making from the front end. More apparent when turning slightly to the right, and bizarrely when I put my ear near the steering wheel boss. (I did check there wasn't any errant rodents under the centre cap!) Its definately roational, as the noise speeds up and slows down according to road speed, and drawing to a halt the noise last longer (eeeekk). I took it to a garage yesterday, and in typical Mini fashion, no noise was evident. It seemed to occur after a few miles of driving, so i'm thinking it something warming up? But this morning, rather annoyingly it did it all the way to work. Frustrating. Tearing my hair out...........

Check behind the disc water shield if you have disc brakes. There could be a rock stuck behind it, that's quite common.
Check there's nothing dragging on the driveshaft or joints.
Jack up the car and hold the wheel at the top and bottom and try to rock it back and forward, and the same left to right. Top to bottom there should be no movement at all, left to right there can be a little from the steering but you will be able to tell the difference. If the wheel is rocking about all over the place then the wheel bearing will need inspecting/replacing , and check all the suspension while you're at it.

just guessing but could be aslightly warped brake disc. My brakes squel like a pig after i have stamped on them a few times or have been driving like a feckin head case! My old man had this on his galaxy and a new disc solved it! hope this helps

Cheers, just been to a garage, and he reckons its the speedo cable. Which probably explains why it sounds much louder if i put my ear by the steering wheel. All bearings, brakes looked fine when i checked this week. I've replaced a cable before on my 84 Mini with twin clocks and whilst been awkward, was do-able. This is not gonna be! Got a standard fit Walnut dash (93 Mayfair). Any ideas how you can get the dash out? Does the speedo drive off the gear box? Thanks again
