Hello, I'm looking for a bit of help, I hope this is the right area in the forum.

I've had an old mini engine in the corner of my garage for years, its missing its 12g295 head, I sold that in a crazy moment a few years ago. And doesn't have any other ancillaries, apart from the remote change housing and gear stick.

The engine plate says

9FD SAH 36833

The gearbox is

22A1288

Its got a few random stamps on it like

254R

12A497

RMC 23758 / 32(1 or 4)

9FB31150

The pistons have kind of D shapes on them and say M2050 Front

So I think/hope its a late 60s 3 synchro, remote change 998 cooper engine - but was looking for confirmation.. I've attached some pics for reference.

Whats more, I'm looking to sell it, and wanted to have some opinions on whether it would have more value as is, or more value dismantled, machined if necessary, and rebuilt (factoring in the machine/rebuild cost)

Cheers!

Richard

My Apologies, I've realised I'd asked this question before several years a go, its likely from a 1968 Mk 2 Cooper.

The question remains though how to get the most out of it in terms of selling it on.

Any ideas welcome.

You could try putting it for sale on the Mk1 Forum website, a lot of their members are into earlier stuff

Yes that's a 998 high compression Cooper engine, it could be Mk1 or Mk2. The gearbox is a 3 synchro as fitted to the 998 Cooper. The pistons are what are known as D-Top pistons as fitted to the Cooper engines.

You'll find the engine code on the following link

I would say it would be better to sell it as is. The box is not that popular, being a 3-synchro. Trying to find new D-Top pistons is not easy and by the time you have had any machining done you will still just have a block with no head.
