I have a temperamental reverse light switch on my mini. It's fine one day but flickery the next.

I was told to order the standard reverse light switch from minispares GAE191 which I did and which is listed on the somerford mini page as the right one however it doesn't actually fit to thread in the hole! The current one I have is both fine thread and about 3/4 inch size. (it is a bosch part)

Looks more like this

Is the light just supposed to come on when the plunger is fully depressed or just partially depressed?

Thanks

Any thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated

There was a switch that had two pairs of contacts...one set for reversing and the other for inhib....My SPi has a "standard" switch with no inhib contacts - I think it's an M14 fine thread - there is an odd setting procedure, so maybe your's is just on the cusp of making/not making.

Let's start with the basics...

998 or 1300 as the two are different, but both work on the principle of an adjustable push switch which is screwed in and out to get the correct adjustment, which probably explains your issue, that the switch is not adjusted correctly.

Apologies 1300 Rover cooper and I only have one pair of contacts on my switch.

I understand it may need adjusting, I have tried by putting the car in reverse and screwing it in until the lights come on. I would guess this is not the correct way.

The main thing that worries me is if I remove the switch and press it manually the lights only come on with a slight press of the plunger and even then will flicker.

Much appreciated

Toby

That's pretty much how you adjust them...

but the switch is a positional off-on-off switch, ie it's pressed a little will be on, but then as you push harder it should again go off...

The art is getting it in the middle of the 'on' position when the selector is in the 'R' Position.

Okay thanks. I was just reading a good post on the AMR about the same thing. They just seem tricky.

I'm going to get my multimeter out, have another go later this morning and report back.

Thanks

Well I had a go yesterday with the reverse switch and adjusted it to the middle point as suggested and it is improved however:

1. There seems to be slack in the system. The lights won't come on at the same point if you come from D as if you come from P it's almost as if there is some play somewhere in the selector. As far as I can see everything appears tight, although my lever has a little wobble in it. I'm thinking it may just be wear??

2. I set it up working well enough and came back today to test and the lights refuse to come on at all. The lock nut is still tight and everything is good. If I go and screw it in and out and it they start to work again...

I am guessing my switch is just worn out. Do you know of any similar cars that use that part or something similar for a replacement?

Thanks

Toby

Hi

I happen to be gearing up myself to fit a new switch...  I bought a GAE191 from MiniSpares..

http://www.minispare...lks/GAE191.aspx

and it looks like this... From Intermotor Automotive Components in Nottingham.   The last one I had didn't have a locknut and seems to have unwound itself...

Yes I bought that one too. Unfortunately I found it doesn't fit and is the wrong part for my transmission.

Have you got any cleaning tips for the existing one?

oh boy... then i'm in for some fun.. :-)   I removed the existing one last night but left it plugged in..  i was going to put the battery in and test what happens if i press the switch in before replacing it..  such a pain to put in...

and whilst I was looking under the car  I found the front lower stabilizer was detached from the engine..  so i need to test this fits into my transmission before I go and buy some new bolts for the stabilizers... no wonder we had to creep over speed bumps... !!  (all the fault of a garage who apparently didn't reattached things after changing the engine bushes - v. dangerous....)

i wouldn't know about the cleaning tips.. mine looks a bit gunky..

I will take one out of a selector here and try and match it to a part number for you from the rover parts catalog, failing that will a second hand one do you if tested ok ?

I know the stabilizer bolt problems had my top steady bolt shear off in the hole 3 times!

That would be great guessworks. I return to the UK on Sept 6th to save you sending it all the way out to Cayman.

Thanks for the help!

The switch you require p/n 13H5045

I'm investigating a source for new replacements.

The one I replaced initially was from the well-stocked Stockwell Motors on Stockwell Road... nr Stockwell underground in London... long time ago... cost between £7 and £15 (not sure which way)..  they found it based on my number plate in their system.

Would Partsco / Unipart Automotive have one?
