Well, went to the MOT (Belgium)  today after weeks or even months of preparing the car.

It's a 1978 998c saloon from the Nederlands with 60k on the clock & the previous owner looked after it.

So my biggest worry was the emissions, which it passed.

Lights, check!

Brakes (drums all round), check!

Suspension, check!

Bodywork, check!

It was all going really well until he looked at the mirrors: Nice shinny torpedo shaped ones from Minispares.

FAIL!

Not because of the shape, or obvious lack or rear-view vision. But because all after-market door mirrors from Minispares (I phoned to double-check), don't have the E number stamp.

So months of work getting the car ready, and it fails because the door mirrors are not E number stamped.

Lucky I kept the god awful black plastic ones, which will be swapped over every year for the strictest EU MOT - Belgium.

Still have to wait a month for the Conformity Certificate from Brussels DIV (DVLA equivalent), and then, hopefully, we're off!

Cheers from Belgium

No, just bureaucracy...the DIV here has the same reputation as the DVLA has.

The MOT is annual but if you have a car less than 10 years old and do less than 10k per year, you get a bonus of a two year gap.

The test we have here, the "statutory roadworthiness examination" has a fearsome reputation.  We spent 8 months going over every single last bit of the bodywork, suspension, steering and brakes looking for any last bit the examiners might pull us up on.  The day came and I took it to the test centre and it seems they've 'relaxed' their attitudes: the test took all of 10 minutes and the car was through without an advisory.  The best thing is it is a one off - no more tests/MOTs ever again :D

unless you register it as an oldtimer then you only need to go once and then never again, unless it changes from owner.

The 'oldtimer' (classic car) system has many financial benefits BUT you can't take your children to school in a 'oldtimer' nor can you go to work. Great as a second car, but if you use your 1978 mini as your daily drive, then this system wont allow it.

Drying to work out why they don't want you to drive to work/school? It's not because of the mileage, as that's unlimited......

Shall I just say that as a temp resident, your car used to pass a Control Tecnique in Belgium every time, 'ahem', if there was a suitably placed bottle of whiskey in the passenger seat - not that I would ever have entered into such a practice of course ;D
