Just came across this forum while scouring the web for a fix to my wheel rub problem and after a bit of a search I can see others with the same problem but with no solution :D

So the car has 17" BBS wheels fitted with I think 205/40/17's (need to double check) and they're non RF's.

Basically with someone in the rear seat the wheels rub on bumps or fast bends. I'd imagine the solution is stiffer springs or even just taller ones but I'm not sure which to go for.

Not looking to fit coilovers or anything as I want to keep it stock.

Anyone any ideas?

Here's a pic when I got it, it has he run flats in this on it but the ride height still looks the same when stationary

Hi mate, this forum is aimed at classic minis, you would have more chance of a quick answer on one of the dedicated new mini forums.

I think it is just a case of putting stiffer springs I it buddy, no point in putting higher springs because you will more than likely just ruin the handling of the car.... Check everything underneath thoroughly though make sure nothing has snapped or broken..

Good luck though :)

Ours is exactly the same. I fitted 215 45r 17 tyres in place of the runcraps and with someone in the rear seat it scrapes on a bump or fast corner.

I'm looking into coilovers for it to stiffen it up a bit as the standard suspension is very bouncy.

You can buy stiffer springs that were used on the JCW version. These will probably help.

Haha thanks lads :D I was wondering why most of my search results were all to do with the classics!!

I'll look into the JCW springs....and a classic mini (seriously the R53 has grown on me to the point where a classic's on the bucket list)

That is the wrong size tyre. that size is well known for rubbing issues.

To the op, a standard set up should not rub. Get the bushes checked in the rear suspension , especially the rear arms.

I had 20 boxes of floor tiles in my car a few months ago. It looked like a low rider but didn't rub.

Yup, I realise that.

Will be fine once it's stiffer.. It's only on bumps and fast corners, not all the time.

Holds the road so much better with 20mm extra rubber though!

Lose the rubber, uprate the springs and dampers and you will have a better handling car and no rubbing issues ;D

Or you could just ask your mates to go on a diet, are they a bit 'circumferentially challenged' if I may ask?

If you're suspension is bouncy then I'd follow badboytunes advice and get the bushes checked, they are a well known issue on older MINIS and a MINIs suspension shouldn't be soft. I had 215s fitted to mine without any rubbing but I was on lowered springs & aftermarket wheels with a different offset to the OEM wheels (this was done on purpose to minimise the rubbing).

To the OP same as above, I'd also investigate the offset of your wheels (The ET number on the inside) as 17s with an offset in the region of 37 has a tendancy to rub on the rear of a MINI. OEM MINI 17" wheels have an offset of 48, so a 37 means that the wheel sits 10mm further out from where it should be which causes them tyre to rub the arch on the outside whenunder load.

you should fit 10" wheels. that's bound to stop it scuffing.

I fitted 215/40x17 to my R50 S spokes a couple of years ago when I replaced the original 205/45x17 runflats.......if you drop the profile ratio as the tyre width goes up, the tyre height then stays about the same with less possibility of rubbing the arches. (ie. from 45 to 40 profile tyre in this case).
