Hi,

I was just grinding down the welds on the Lower Rear Quarter Repair I've fabricated and fitted and was wondering wheather or not I could get away with just fillering, prepping and painting the lower section ? as the top half isn't too bad atall and it'd save a lot of money and more importantly time as I don't have much free time anymore to work on the mini.

Is there a way basically to paint a panel partialy ? and if so please please please tell me how!

Thankyou,

Cliff

It can be done but getting the match exactly can be tricky,I think we just masked up the majority of the panel that didn't need to be sprayed,t-cut the old paint, primered it rubbed it down than put the top coat on, but doing lighter coats on the old paint after a few days once it's gone hard you can t-cut it.

Yup, I do it all the time, just need  a decent colour matched rattle can and blow it in

Thank you Alex and Shifty, I did think it was possible but wasn't too sure.

I have just T-cut'ed the rear quarter and window frame but I can see lots of defects, they look like they might be burn marks from grinder or the welder, I may have to paint the while thing after all!!!! :/, I'll see if I can get a picture of the problem.

Thanks :)

If you are spraying only the bottom half of the panel then only mask off along the seams so you don't get over spray on the rear panel.
Don't mask off across the panel or you will get a bad line that will never vanish.
Scotch brite the area above where you want to spray so the over spray bonds to the top half of the panel and it will blend in nicely.
Then give it a couple of weeks and wetsand and buff the whole panel
