Yesterday working outside front of house mini parked on drive was using an electric planner to smooth out some wood doing this for a couple of hours when all of a sudden heard this massive bang looked around and could not see anything then turned round and saw the rear scree shattered nobody around then thought it might be somebody with an air rifle had a very close look but could not find anything.

Do you people know for reason why this would happen

Regards

Have you checked the blades on your planner for any damage?
Or could you have hit a nail in the wood?

Mmmmm the air rifle might not have enough power to smash the glass unless it was close,

I'm going with the nail or something coming from the plainer

I've seen it happen before (not on a mini) - it was caused by thermal shock. was it in the sun?

Happened on my first mini years a go . Shut the door as usual , walked 10 meters away . Lit up a fag , and then the whole winsreen just fell apart . It hadnt even had a stonechip in it . It was crappy glass anyway , not the safest .

Wonder if the noise from the planer hit the frequency the glass resonates at.
Possible, maybe.

.... no

(!)

It couldn't resonate anyway due to the rubber seal damping it.

This is what happened to our house window when somebody fired an air rifle at it.

I can't see this theory holding true however the rubber would dampen the glass so it couldnt resonate against the metal shell but it could theoretically resonate itself at a certain frequency, the rubber would help but not prevent it shattering. But I can't see the planer causing it through vibration alone.

No, think about it alex, if you flick a wine glass, it rings, you touch the rim, it stops. EXACTLY the same thing.

But i'd agree that the planer couldnt have dont it.

Aliens?

no, just thermal shock, it happens!

Yep, but the middle of the glass should theoretically still resonate, granted less than it would if the glass was free standing and held in a way that didn't dampen it.
