Hi. I've come across some boxes of original boxed stock of BMC parts. Most I don't think are for Mini, and from the various sizes I would have thought they spanned different models.

Is there some logic to the part numbering system that could point me in the direction of vehicle they belong too? or is it a case of obtaining the parts catalogues for everything BMC made over the years and sifting through them?

Thanks

Googling the part number usually brings up an answer.

Failing that, sitting down with a stack of parts books or microfiches is probably the way to go.

+1 on Google.  If there was a logic or order to the part numbering I am not aware of it.

When using Google enter the part number with any spaces or dashes between characters as you read them on the part or box.  If nothing comes up, remove the dashes and spaces and try again.

Didn't have much luck with google. Its ok if someones sold one on ebay recently but most of these items havn't. The part books are all scanned in, and so google has nothing to index. What it needs is decent print parts manuals scanned in and ocr software to pick out the numbers, then google would be well away.

I imagine people have done it, but with the amount of work involved in obtaining all the documents and processing them, I can understand them keeping them close to their chests.

Ill keep an eye out for the various parts books at shows as the scanned copies that I've found arnt good enough for OCR software.

Thanks for the reply's

How many part numbers have you got? If you post them here we can try and help with any lists we mave have.

I have an MG Midget one which would be a nightmare to scan and ocr as it is bound. I wouldn't be happy tearing up apart to do that nor I would guess would anyone with other parts manuals which is why there isn't much on google.

And no, there is no logic to the numbering system. Not on any other manufacturer I've come across either.

Theres 3 big boxes of them, Some sealed boxes, some unsealed, some spares with nothing at all to tell. Most range 60's to early 70's on the labels. Someone was due to give pennies for them, I told him they were sought after and he offered to give me a cut for punting them on ebay. So I don't want to waste everyone's time on here when I'm profiting. I'll have to find all the electronic catalogues I can find, print the indexes and trawl though one item at a time. Once I've got the indexes ill try OCR them for others to use.

Thankyou for the offer though Gazza. I'll OCR everything I can eventually for others to use.

You could try typing them in on the search of a site like Rimmer or Moss Europe. They cover multiple marques so something might work.

Try Moss as they supply parts for many of the BMC models, also try David Manners in Birmingham.
