......on a 96 1275 Sprite? I'm fed up of finding 1st instead of third and my change is sloppy. Any way to replace any bits which will make some difference?

I've never had the problem of selecting the wrong gear. But generally the roll pins (two of them) in the linkage tend to wear and you will be able to see the play when you wiggle the gear stick. May be other areas to check.

Does it have a quickshift fitted?

No, standard. Just noticed that slick change thing in minispares which supposedly keeps the shift over at the 3rd/4th change gate. Anyone tried one.

It think you should first sort out the underlying issue of the play. The gears are very far apart on a mini so it should be very hard to select the wrong gear.

It won't go into 1st, it just crunches. If I take my time shifting it's fine, but as you say there is such a throw across the gate to 3rd I have a habit of catching 1st. That bias thing from minispares is here

I'd still like to tighten the slop though.

I had a quick shift fitted until recently. The gate was super close, felt really good. Bit getting into 1st felt a bit notchy at times. So this has been replaced with a standard lever and its like stirring porridge in comparison lol. However, it goes into gear really easily now.

Perhaps you have an underlying issue.?

I'm gonna fit a braided line to the clutch slave to cure the crunch I have in first anyway then bleed it all up and then take a close look at all parts of the shift. Cheers for any advice.
