Yeah he'll easily get insurance for a standard 1275. Try all the usual companies. Adrian Flux are likely to be one of the cheapest, they're who I will be using with my engine swapped, modified 1275 at 17.

You'll be fine, not a massive difference between 998's and 1275s when i was looking at quotes back when i was 17. Although a 'Cooper' was considerably more.

I paid £870ish for my first year on my 1275 Tahiti. Was about 4 years ago though now.

in december after having passed for 6 months i had £1083 a year on a standard 1275, it was with direct line as part of a multicar deal with my mums car and her as a named driver
