Spec....

1380cc A series

Ported + flowed head

Kent 276MD cam

Twin 1.5" Su's on a maniflow manifold + maniflow exhaust system

pressed rockers - because i'm too tight to buy 1.5 ratio ones.

Lightened flywheel

10.1 CR

soooo.....before everyone screams at me saying get it rolling roaded etc etc..............I KNOW!!!!!!  But time is against me as i've been struggling with the engine build (series of unforseen problems and lack of funds) and my next rally is 10 days away!!!!!

Didn't know i had an Aldon Yellow 100AY dizzy until a few weeks back when i cleaned the dizzy of layers of paint and discovered the etched parts number.

So, could do with any tips or pointers in the right direction on the best timing settings to get the most from this engine setup until i can book in a RR session.

Cheers in advance

That's an interesting snippet.
I run a 1380 with SW5 and Aldon recommended a Red! (Which seems fine by the way)

Aldon said a Red ? they only have 20degs of mechanical advance built in and need lots of static advance, what are you running your at ? and whats the max it giving at 5000rpm? I spoke to Aldon before I did the article in the FAQs on the Aldon Red/Yellow and they said and most of the tuners said the same the Red is only for race applications. I assume you dont have vac advance either ?

I know yours would drive better with a SW5 and a Aldon Yellow on road with a vacuum advance

Have a read of the article Calver did here http://www.calverst....tion_timing.htm

But if you use this method then you most likely get to much advance low down

Calver wrote this A-series dizzies - the Aldon duo - 'Yellow' and 'red'. The yellow dizzy has a reasonably gently advancing ignition curve to cope with almost anything road orientated. The red dizzy has an 'immediate' advance curve that comes in with a bang and is all over by around 4,000rpm for race use.

August 2005 post Distributors What a A Series Needs

If you currently have your engine timing set with the red at a figure of 8degs at idle then its most likely short of a few degres to make max power

Aldon actually list the Red here http://www.aldonauto...uct.asp?P_ID=99

For a lot wilder spec cams and Race Rally applications where full throttle is the norm

Many thanks for the straight forward advice...much appreciated and think i need to tweek my timing....will break out the timing gun later.

I agree with your above statement regarding the 'Red' dizzy....spoke to Aldon myself before i discovered i've actually got a 'Yellow' dizzy and they suggested a 'yellow' for my setup and needs (rallying). They also suggested they could tweek it a bit if after a RR session it wasn't quite right. Can't remember the exact price for this 'tweek' but it was far far less than a new dizzy and found Aldon very quick and helpful to deal with.

Can i ask, seeing as i don't have vac advance on mine, what are the advantages/disadvantages?

Any road car needs a Vacuum Advance Unit, its improves mpg when crusing as a cruse mixture is weak and a weak mixture needs more advance to burn correctly, and second the engine will produce more torque under the same condition and will be more responsive and lively while  on a light throttle.

All engines used on the road NEED A VACUUM ADVANCE UNIT, race engine dont as at full throttle the vacuum drops away and the advance unit stops giving advance and your back to max mechanical from the weights.

You can buy a unit from them and take the blanking plate off and lift the baseplate and fit one dead easy, Aldon offer the Yellow with one, give then a ring

Rally1380 - what octane petrol are you planning to use? This will make a significant difference to the optimum ignition timing.

And have you run a compression test on this motor as a check?

Rally1380...

I also have a Aldon Yellow non-vacuum distributor 100ay. Just wondering whether you are still running non-vacuum distributor

or have you changed it?..   My Mini will be used similar to your Clubman ie Road Rallies (at some point!) and not used as a  'daily' car. Cheers
