Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that someone can offer us a little bit of advice...

We have a 2007 Mini One 1.4 petrol. An engine warning light came on and when we got it looked at we were told it had very low compression on two cylinders (we were told this by two separate garages). The Mini drove fine when we took it in, by the time they had replaced the valves it was given back to us and it drove terribly. It now loses power intermittently, like a misfire, so fine one minute, then it splutters for a few seconds, then returns to normal.

The garage have told us that they think this could be that bits of the damaged vales have gone through and damaged the cat causing the sensors to send various messages to cut power etc. To me this sounds very unlikely, they also said rather than paying for the cat and more work that we would be best off to trade it in (not with them). To me this suggests that they don't really have any idea what the problem is and they don't want to try and deal with it.

Does anyone know what this could be down to, they have supposedly checked coils and plugs. Any ideas or thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks.

The N14 engine is generally quite good. Where did you get the work done? Why were the valves replaced. The usual suspect on these is  a headgasket.......

The work wasn't at a specialist garage, just one recommended by a friend. The valves were burnt out so were replaced. Would a head gasket cause the symptoms that I have described?

It could be a head gasket, although id expect it to have been replaced along with the valves
