Hi everyone

The previous owner of my Mini upgraded the radio/tape to a JVC KD-G162.  I have managed to track down a Rover R652, which isn't quite the right one for my year (it's a newer radio from c. 1994; my car is a 1989 model) but it is more in keeping with the original spec.

It wasn't expensive, so if it doesn't work it's not a disaster (I know I'll need to get a code for it).

However, I know NOTHING about this kind of installation, so I'd be grateful for some pointers.

I can see the plugs/wiring in the back of the JVC, and can push the JVC unit through from the back no problem, so getting it out shouldn't be difficult.

Will the R652 be a straight swap for the JVC or will I need to do anything?  The invoice in my history file relating to the JVC installation mentions 'wiring in a 12V supply' so I wonder if the wiring was altered to fit it and therefore if I will need to do anything to the wiring to 'downgrade' in this way.

Any suggestions/comments welcome please...

Thanks!

You might find that as the invoice say's that a 12v feed had to be installed that there may not have previously been a radio fitted to the car.

Or it could be that the 12v live was dead so a new one had to be run.

either way, there will probably need to be some modifications to the wiring to accept the Rover unit.

At least as there is an invoice for a stereo being installed by a garage, it will more than likely have been wired in nicely and not a tangles mess of odd wires and sellotape.

You could always pop up a pic of the back of the Rover unit and the wiring you have with the JVC removed and perhaps i can help further?

Ben

Hi Ben

Thank you for the reply.

I took out the JVC unit this afternoon. As expected it had a different socket from the Rover R652 (the newer type of narrower, horizontal pins rather than vertical ones) but the invoice for the JVC suggested that an adapter had been supplied by the garage which fitted it and I found when I looked closely that this was indeed the case.  I pulled out the adapter completely and plugged in the R652 (into what must have been the original plug), turned it on and got FM. Tape player works perfectly too. The R652 has a fuse already in the back so I guess that should be OK.

The Mini originally had a radio - I have the late 80s 'pod' speakers on the back and the radio case/bracket thing is marked '1989' - so I hope all will be well.  But is there anything I may have forgotten/not done properly that might cause problems down the line??

Thanks!

If all of the wires are correctly insulated and everything works as it should then i can't see there being any problems down the line.

Glad it all worked out for you.

Cheers

Ben
