As far as I'm aware, the engine number doesnt get checked at the MOT, they're only really interested in the reg number and the VIN/chassis number. You can assign your own engine number if you wish, the main issue is to make sure that your engine number matches the engine number listed on the V5. If you do choose to assign a new number, then you will need to declare the change of engine to the DVLA, for which they now usually require confirmation that a genuine engine swap has taken place i.e. a copy of the receipt/invoice from the garage that did the swap, or an engineers report (on headed note paper) that confirms the engine swap and the new engine number, if you did the work yourself.
hmm seems like a,lot of hassle... if you think it will get through MOTs ok then i dont think ill bother lol

It is a legal requirement to inform DVLA of a change in engine though. Not that anybody is likely to check until you come to sell, at which point it could well reduce the value and put some buyers off due to the hassle of getting it declared.
ah right i see, i plan on doing everything i need to do in terms of informing the right people when i switch the engines (DVLA, insurance, etc). but when i inform DVLA/insurance will they want the engine number as proof then?

As I mentioned above DVLA now tend to want some kind of written confirmation that a genuine engine swap has taken place, as opposed to you just sending off the V5 stating the new engine number. Insurers generally won't be interested in engine numbers, they tend to only be interested in the size of engine.
ok cheers for that... might have a small problem then...
